THE HARTWELL STORY
Originally built as M.H’s Grocerteria in the late 1950s by owner, Caitlin Ward's, late grandfather, this building has served the Boylan Heights community in downtown Raleigh for decades as a grocery store, neighborhood grill and convenience store.
Caitlin and her husband, Matt, are looking forward to continuing her grandfather's legacy by restoring this one-of-a-kind property to serve as a retail and community space offering goods from local makers as well as indoor and outdoor spaces to host workshops, events, outdoor maker markets and more. In addition to hosting local vendors and makers as a part of our Outdoor Maker's Markets in our green space, Hartwell offers a highly curated retail area featuring only locally sourced goods. We are currently home to over 20 local artisans and small businesses. Retail products range from handmade jewelry to candles and more!

Hartwell is excited to host both indoor and outdoor workshops. Our previous workshops range from Tamale making, terrarium building, candle making, and much more! Be sure to follow along on Instagram and Facebook to see our monthly offerings. We enjoy partnering with other small businesses to connect the maker with the community. Workshops are a great way to connect to the community and meet new people!
